DONALD Trump has struck a bombshell deal with Denmark giving the US “permanent” control over Greenland’s security.

The deal is set to bar adversaries like Russia, China and other non-Nato members from having bases or troops on the strategic Atlantic island.

Trump said it will guarantee America will “forever have complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland” for security.

He added that the US would “immediately” start ramping up its military presence on the mineral-rich Danish territory.

The president’s comments give the impression the US now has sole responsibility for Greenland’s security – however, an interview by Marco Rubio with Fox News wasn’t as strong.

The Secretary of State told the outlet that the agreement now gives Washington permanent military rights on the island at zero cost to the American taxpayer.

A senior official said it will give the US access, basing and overflight rights on the island, but stops short of transferring sovereignty.

Trump said: “We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction.

“This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies.

“We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land.

“We will be very protective of it! This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special.”

Additional details about the agreement were not immediately disclosed.

Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen said it is “gratifying” to announce a deal that will strengthen Greenland’s security and the Western alliance.

He added: “The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in international cooperation. It is for the benefit of us all.”

Danish leader Mette Frederiksen said she was “pleased” with the deal, which will “strengthen common security” interests in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

Trump has been insistent that Greenland is crucial for US security since his return to the White House, at one point refusing to rule out a forceful takeover.

It was a flashpoint for the Nato alliance, with Denmark and Greenland repeatedly condemning US sovereignty efforts.

But Trump’s post suggests an understanding may have finally been reached to bring an end to the saga.

He said: “For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it.

“I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement, there is no end!

“We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People.”
