There has been a global backlash and Uefa threatened to stage a boycott against future World Cups if Fifa went ahead with it.
But Uefa welcomed news that Fifa had backed down and vowed to make sure a similar plot doesn’t happen again.

The organisation said in a statement: “It is right that, in the coming days and weeks, Uefa will work with its associations and in close co-operation with other confederations to reflect on how this happened and devise a plan to make sure that it cannot occur again.”
