WREXHAM football shirt sales have leapfrogged Arsenal and Manchester City at the UK’s largest airports group.

The Disney series about the Welsh club co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has helped shirt sales finish third behind Liverpool and Man United, according to MAG, which owns Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports.

Shirt sales at JD Sports outlets across the three were up 19 per cent year-on-year.

Andrew Macmillan, at MAG, which handles 66million passengers a year, said: “It’s not surprising to see multiple Northern teams represented in the Manchester league table.

“The airport serves a catchment of 22million people across the whole of the North.

“It’s also no surprise to see United, City and Liverpool featuring heavily in all parts of the country given their global appeal and recent success.

The rise in Wrexham shirt sales is astonishing and partly reflects the club’s growing domestic fan base.

Especially in the case of Manchester, which is its primary international airport.

“But it also demonstrates how impactful the behind-the-scenes documentary was for the club’s profile, coupled with its A-list ownership.

“That will have driven a high volume of sales with the tens of millions of tourists who use Manchester and Stansted in particular as their gateway to the UK as a whole.”

Wrexham kicked off their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City.

They are set to play Watford next.
