Wild growth, including bushes, Congress grass and hemp up to six feet tall, has overrun roads and public spaces in several sectors of Mohali, with residents alleging that the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and the Municipal Corporation have failed to maintain the areas, posing safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.Residents said dense vegetation has encroached on the road dividing Sectors 81 and 82, making it difficult for motorists to spot oncoming traffic and navigate vehicles merging from Airport Road. They alleged that the Public Health, Horticulture and Civil departments of GMADA had failed to clear the overgrowth.Brahmjit Singh, a resident of Sector 105, said the condition of the main roads in Sectors 100 and 104 was equally poor, while internal roads in various sectors were in an even worse state. He questioned the utilisation of GMADA’s annual horticulture and garbage-lifting budget of around Rs 100 crore, claiming little maintenance work had been carried out over the past year.Commuters visiting the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) and the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) said the unchecked growth of hemp and Congress grass had made the roads dark, unsafe and vulnerable particularly to women and two-wheeler riders.“It seems there is no department in the administration or government that monitors whether other departments are functioning properly or not,” said Swaran Chaudhary, a senior citizen from Mohali.
