WRESTLING, weightlifting and strongman legend Ken Patera has broken his neck after falling at the gym.

Patera, 83, broke his C1 vertebra – the neck bone directly underneath the back of the skull – in a devastating accident.

The former WWF star was working his way back to full health after recovering from major back surgery two and a half years ago.

Well-wishes have been pouring in for Patera since news of his crushing setback circulated online.

One fan wrote: “Ken has overcome incredible challenges throughout his life. We’re hoping that same strength carries him through this one.”

Another added: “I wish Ken Patera every success and a full and fast recovery.”

A third said: “Prayers up for Ken. I’ll be praying for him.”

And a fourth responded: “One of the greatest strongmen ever.”

Patera’s long and storied career started in shot putt, and he finished sixth in the 1968 Olympic trials.

He then transitioned to weightlifting, won four straight American titles and competed at the 1972 Olympics for Team USA.

In 1977, Patera took part in the first-ever World’s Strongest Man competition, finishing third.

And he became a prominent villain in professional wrestling in the 1970s and 1980s, with many fans calling for him to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
