SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

★★★★★

WITH this high-flying fourth film of the franchise, it seems Marvel has finally got their fangs into the tangled web that can be a superhero film.

Undoubtedly the best Spider-Man movie in decades, it sees Tom Holland and co back in New York. And let’s face it, where else is better to swoop from skyscrapers and save the world?

It feels like a more authentic, mature version of the brand — not just the character, but the storyline, too.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has risen to the task of dealing with the cast — and probably the audience — ageing nearly a decade since Holland’s first solo film in the role, in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

But, as one exciting Marvel crossover character (no spoilers) brutally states, his work is “small potato stuff”.

So he’s set on a bigger project which, you guessed it, will save the world.

Also, Peter is lonely. Doctor Strange previously cast a spell making everyone in his life forget he’s the man behind the mask.

Most important is his lost love MJ (Zendaya) and best pal Ned (Jacob Batalon).

When he tries to get back into their lives, it makes for poignant moments.

With breathtaking scenes, brilliant baddies, excellent Marvel crossovers and a few twists in the tale, this sleeker, more sophisticated — and often scarier — Spidey will have fans wanting to take another swing.
