PORTUGAL and Spain meet in Arlington for the standout tie of the Round of 16, a fixture that carries fierce history between two of Europe’s oldest rivals. This is a repeat of the sides’ epic 2018 group-stage draw and last year’s Nations League final, and with Spain yet to concede a goal all tournament, backing a routine Spanish victory feels like the wrong read. Here’s the thinking leg by leg.
Mikel Oyarzabal to score anytime
Oyarzabal has been the story of Spain’s tournament, scoring twice in the win over Austria to take his tally to four goals, level for the tournament’s top-scoring charts. He’s generating 5.07 shots per 90 minutes and 2.38 on target, backed by an expected goals return of 3.84 for the finals so far.
Portugal have looked shaky at the back all tournament, conceding in two of their four games including a nervy spell against Croatia, and Oyarzabal’s movement in behind has already proven decisive against similarly well-drilled defences.
Cristiano Ronaldo to score anytime
Ronaldo scored his first-ever World Cup knockout goal from the penalty spot against Croatia and has three goals from these finals overall, generating a team-high 3.85 shots per 90 minutes and 1.79 on target.
He was visibly frustrated at being substituted before Gonçalo Ramos’s late winner, and reports out of the Portugal camp suggest he’ll keep his place regardless. Spain’s defence has been superb, but it hasn’t yet faced a forward with Ronaldo’s knack for making the very most of a single half-chance.
Spain to win
Spain remain unbeaten and have not conceded a single goal across four matches at this World Cup, with goalkeeper Unai Simón’s clean sheet run breaking Iker Casillas’s record from Spain’s 2010 title-winning campaign. Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte have been billed as the best centre-back pairing of the tournament so far.
Portugal’s route here was considerably shakier, needing four VAR interventions to go their way and a stoppage-time winner just to see off Croatia, and De la Fuente’s side look the more complete team heading into this one.
Over 8.5 Total Match Corners
The pre-match model projects a huge 12.75 total corners for this fixture, among the highest of any match we’ve covered this tournament.
Portugal have averaged 4.75 corners per game across their four matches, while Spain have averaged 8, and matches involving either side have produced combined totals of 9, 5, 7 and 14 for Portugal, and 12, 7, 7 and 9 for Spain, comfortably clearing this line in four of those eight games.
Both teams like to work the ball into wide areas patiently, and with plenty of quality out wide on both sides, a corner-heavy afternoon looks the likely outcome even if goals are harder to come by.
Portugal vs Spain match preview
This is the standout tie of the Round of 16, and one steeped in history. Portugal and Spain have met 40 times, with Spain holding the edge on 18 wins to Portugal’s 7, and 15 draws between them.
Their most famous World Cup meeting came in the 2018 group stage in Sochi, a thrilling 3-3 draw built around a Ronaldo hat-trick, while more recently Portugal got the better of Spain in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final.
Portugal’s route to the last 16 was anything but smooth, and arguably fortunate. Roberto Martínez’s side drew with DR Congo and Colombia either side of a 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan in the group stage, before falling behind to Croatia in the Round of 32.
Despite finishing with 57% possession, Portugal were actually out-shot on target by Croatia (2 to 6) and needed four separate VAR interventions to go their way, including a stoppage-time offside call that denied Croatia what looked like a deep injury-time equaliser, before Gonçalo Ramos’s header won it.
Spain’s path has been far more serene: a goalless draw with Cape Verde, a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay, and a 3-0 win over Austria in the Round of 32 that De la Fuente called almost perfect, all without conceding a single goal.

Portugal vs Spain predicted line-ups
Portugal (4-2-3-1): Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha; Neto, Fernandes, Leão; Ronaldo.
Spain (4-3-3): Simón; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri, Olmo; Yamal, Oyarzabal, Baena.
Portugal vs Spain team news
Portugal: Martínez has a fully fit squad to choose from, with no fresh injury or suspension concerns after the win over Croatia. Ronaldo is expected to keep his place up front despite his late substitution last time out, while the main selection question is on the right, where Pedro Neto is competing with Bernardo Silva and Francisco Conceição.
Spain: De la Fuente is without Nico Williams (adductor) and Yeremy Pino (shoulder), both ruled out of the tournament, but is otherwise expected to name an unchanged side. Yamal, Porro, Olmo and Laporte were all managed with lighter training loads in the buildup, but none is considered a fitness concern.
Verdict
Spain’s defensive record is the standout story of this tournament, and Portugal have shown enough vulnerability at the back, and enough luck along the way, to suggest their luck could run out here. Both Oyarzabal and Ronaldo have been in exceptional individual form, and with Spain the more complete side across the pitch, a Spanish win built on fine margins at both ends looks the shrewd way in.
