With the merger of seven AAP MPs in BJP set to be notified soon, AAP is set to use the constitutional provision of recalling these MPs.Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has sought time from the President of India to present facts regarding the defection of the party Rajya Sabha MPs to BJP and seek their recall from the Upper House.Official sources in the Chief Minister’s Office have told The Tribune that the CM has sought time for himself and his party MLAs (electorate for electing the Rajya Sabha MPs). Of the seven who defected yesterday to BJP, six — Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta and Vikramjit Singh Sahney — represent Punjab in the Upper House. Other than Gupta, all others were elected by Punjab MLAs in 2022, while Gupta was elected unanimously last year. Only Swati Maliwal was elected from Delhi. The opinion, however, is divided on whether the move will have any effect. Since seven of the 10 MPs have decided to merge, the anti-defection law would not hold because two-third MPs have merged themselves as a unit with BJP.
