Women leaders from the BJP were detained here on Saturday as they tried to march towards the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking an explanation from AAP for opposing the passage of a woman reservation Bill in Parliament recently. The leaders detained by the police included former Union Minister Preneet Kaur, state BJP Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur, vice-presidents Mohinder Kaur Josh and Mona Jaiswal, and secretaries Meenu Sethi, Vandana Sangwan and Renu Thappar.Raising slogans, the women leaders vowed to continue their fight for equal rights.Earlier, state BJP working president Ashwani Sharma claimed that his party had consistently stood for women empowerment.“While political parties often disagree on issues, it is surprising that the Congress and AAP have come together in opposing reservation for women,” Sharma claimed. He added that this reflected sheer political opportunism, with both parties indulging in vote-bank politics and resisting structural reforms that could alter their internal power dynamics.Jai Inder Kaur termed the Opposition to the Bill a “black chapter” for democracy.“The Congress and AAP have consistently treated women merely as a vote bank and have failed them when it comes to ensuring rightful representation. The INDIA bloc appears threatened by the growing political empowerment of women. Women across India will respond strongly to this insult,” she said.
