Irked over inordinate delay in grant of sanction to prosecute its minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his objectionable remarks against Col. Sofiya Qureshi made in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Madhya Pradesh Government to take a decision in four weeks.Along with IAF Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, Col. Qureshi was the face of India’s press briefings on ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May 2025 as the two women officers flanked Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in their interaction with the media.“Enough is enough. You comply with the directions given in paragraphs five and six of our previous order in four weeks,” A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi told solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represented the MP Government, and listed the matter for further hearing after summer vacation. As Mehta submitted that “What he (Shah) said was definitely unfortunate,” the CJI shot back, “Not unfortunate, but most unfortunate and then he has no sense of repentance also”.While making it clear that he was not defending Shah, Mehta said probably the minister intended to praise Col Qureshi but he ended up saying something else as he could not articulate it properly. However, the CJI said, “These political personalities, we know if they want to praise, how articulate they are with their words… He could have soon tendered an apology if it was a slip of tongue. On behalf of Shah, senior advocate Maninder Singh said the minister had immediately issued an apology.Mehta said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed a report in the matter. However, further proceedings have been stalled as the SIT awaits mandatory sanction from the state government.Shah – a Madhya Pradesh BJP leader—sparked a major controversy with his objectionable comments against Col. Qureshi, whom he tried to project as a “sister of terrorists” while addressing a gathering in Ramkunda village near Indore in May, 2025, prompting the Congress to demand his resignation. After he came under fire for his remarks, Shah said if anyone was hurt by his statement, he was ready to apologise 10 times and that he respected Col. Qureshi more than his sister. In an embarrassment to the BJP, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had on May 14 last year ordered registration of an FIR against Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah for passing “dangerous” and “scurrilous” remarks using “language of the gutters” against Col. Sofia Qureshi, saying his remarks had the propensity to cause disharmony, feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between members of different religions. The Supreme Court had on January 19 this year directed the Madhya Pradesh government to decide within two weeks on granting sanction to prosecute Shah for his alleged objectionable remarks targeting Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
