In a major push towards green mobility and sustainable public transport, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will launch a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area of the national capital from Friday. The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).Officials said the project aims to strengthen clean urban mobility, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and improve last-mile connectivity for government employees and commuters in central Delhi. The hydrogen-fuelled shuttle buses will operate between the Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth Metro stations, connecting major government offices and landmarks in the Central Vista region. Key locations on the route include Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Art, and India Gate.According to DMRC, IOCL has provided two hydrogen-powered buses, each with a seating capacity of 35 passengers. The buses are equipped with GPS tracking and CCTV surveillance systems to ensure passenger safety and operational monitoring. The shuttle service will run on all working days from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays. Buses will operate during peak office hours — from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.One bus will run clockwise and the other anti-clockwise, with a frequency of one bus every 30 minutes.Commuters will be able to pay fares through National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC), UPI, and cash. Ticket prices have been kept affordable at Rs 10 and Rs 15, depending on the travel stage. While DMRC will manage operations, ticketing, and passenger support, IOCL will provide drivers and hydrogen fuel infrastructure for the service.Officials described the initiative as a landmark step towards hydrogen-based transportation and environmentally friendly public transit systems. The project is expected to serve as a pilot model for future adoption of clean-energy mobility solutions in cities across India.
