An elderly man died following an alleged altercation over a fire incident in Barkatpur village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Julkan police station, police confirmed here on Thursday.The police have registered an FIR for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Sections 105 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused — Shera Singh and Balwinder Singh — at the Julkan police station.Palwinderjit Singh, son of the deceased man, complained to the police that Shera and Balwinder had set fire to garbage and crop residue near his house. The fields belonging to the alleged accused persons are in front of the complainant’s residence.The complainant said he had gone for work but at around 10.30 am on Wednesday, his wife informed him over the phone that the accused Shera and Balwinder were burning waste near their house. He alleged that despite objections raised by the family, they continued to light the fire.The complainant further alleged that due to strong winds, the fire spread towards their house and engulfed fodder, cow dung cakes and other material stored near their residence. The villagers and fire brigade personnel later rushed to the spot to control the flames.The situation allegedly turned tense when the complainant’s father, Puran Singh, questioned the accused. According to the FIR, both Shera and Balwinder allegedly abused him and pushed him forcefully in the chest.The complainant alleged that Puran also inhaled excessive smoke during the incident, after which his health deteriorated.The family members rushed Puran to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where doctors declared him brought dead.The post-mortem examination report was awaited, which would ascertain the exact cause of death.Police said the investigations were in progress and both the alleged accused persons would be arrested soon.
