But a dressing room team-talk from Thomas Tuchel inspired England to victory.
Jude Bellingham put the Three Lions back in front just after the break before Marcus Rashford came on to seal the win later in the match.
England jumped to the top of Group L as a result – and the thousands of travelling fans in Dallas were absolutely buzzing.

England ratings vs Croatia: Kane and Bellingham lead by example but Three Lions’ defensive weaknesses exposed
ENGLAND, or ‘Set Piece FC’, kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign in Dallas with a thrilling 3-2 win over Croatia.
Harry Kane opened the scoring with a retaken penalty after Croatian encroachment, but Martin Baturina pulled a rabbit from his red and white checkered hat with a sharp strike that rattled the net of Jordan Pickford.
England briefly restored their lead when a Declan Rice corner found an unmarked Kane to head home his second.
However, Croatia hit back just before the break, as FC Dallas forward Petar Musa finished a slick team move on his home turf to leave the match 2-2 at halftime.
England stayed in the dressing room much longer than their opposition at half-time, and it showed as they dominated the second half.
Who else but Jude Bellingham ran in behind the Croatian defence and fired England’s third into the bottom corner with a stunning solo effort, as Thomas Tuchel‘s side turned up the heat in Dallas.
Marcus Rashford then wrapped up a confident win by switching onto his right foot in the box and curling into the corner.

Kane said England “went full gas” in the second half after an inspiring speech from Tuchel at the break.
The captain explained: “I thought it was a game of two halves. In the first half, we were OK.
“Really disappointed to concede in the way we did. I thought we dropped off.
“Credit to the manager, he gave us a speech at half-time and said if we lose, we lose in our way, and I think we saw that in the way we came out in the second half.
“We went full gas and they couldn’t live with it. Credit to everyone for the first game of the tournament.”

He added: “The boss said at half-time to up the tempo, go man for man and completely take the game to them, and that is exactly what happened.
“You saw us at our best level, both with and without the ball and we could have scored three or four goals in that 20-minute spell in the second half.
“We did what we needed to do and finished the game off nicely at the end.”
England next face Ghana in the second group stage match on Tuesday.
