In a bid to revive hockey in the country, Pakistan has appointed Dutchman Herman Kruis as the National Hockey Coaching Advisor, besides roping in three more foreign coaches.David Dayer of Australia will take over as fitness coach, while Bob Veldoph will be the goalkeeping coach and Chris Bowen as technical coach and sports psychologist. All the three coaches have been given a two-year contract and reached Lahore on Saturday. They will be joined by 70-year-old Kruis soon.Besides, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has also appointed Olympian Tahir Zaman as Director of High Performance.Kruis, who has worked previously in Indian hockey and also in The Netherlands, during his two-year contract will help the PHF in developing young talent and preparing teams for major international events. The three foreign coaches soon after reaching Lahore held a meeting with Tahir and other PHF officials in which they discussed the preparation of a comprehensive roadmap for the national hockey programs covering short-term, medium and long-term development plans. The PHF has decided to rely on foreign coaching experts after the national team’s dismal performances in the just-concluded FIH Pro Hockey League in which Pakistan could not win a single match against top teams like Netherlands, Belgium, India, Spain, England, Germany and Australia. With the FIH World Cup due next month, the PHF is hoping the induction of foreign coaches and trainers will help change the performances of the national team in the mega event.
