A serving Lieutenant Colonel posted at the Chandimandir military station in Panchkula was allegedly assaulted inside the Panchkula court complex by lawyers on July 9. He was then allegedly confined in a lawyer’s chamber and forced to sign an agreement..An FIR was registered at the Sector 7 police station in Panchkula on Friday on the charges of voluntarily causing hurt, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, rioting and criminal intimidation.Lt Col Ashish Chandok, 40, has been contesting three cases, filed by his wife at the Panchkula courts, for the past year. He has been living separately from his wife.Lieutenant Colonel Chandok told the police that on July 9, during the hearing of his cases at Family Courts, Panchkula, the opposing lawyer, Maninder Singh Bitta, and his associates misbehaved with him and later called 10-17 lawyers who allegedly assaulted him outside a courtroom.He alleged that Bitta and other lawyers then confined him in the chamber of advocate NS Sodhi, where they assaulted him again.”Bitta and his associates then threatened me to write a ‘raazinama’, else they would not leave me and beat me up,” he told the police.”They got a raazinama signed by me, which I was not able to read. After I signed it, I was allowed to leave the court complex,” he added.He sought strict action against Bitta and his associates.The medical examination revealed two injuries. The X-ray at the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, revealed: “Discontinuity of coccyx (tailbone), likely a fracture.”Station House Officer, Sector 7 police station, Inspector Rajbir Yadav, said the accused were yet to be arrested. “We will proceed further after seeing the CCTV footage,” he added.The CCTV footage was seized from the Panchkula court complex in the afternoon.Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime, Amrinder Singh said, “The accused are yet to be arrested. We will take action soon. The CCTV footage reflects that a crime has taken place.”Bitta, who has been named as an accused in the case, has also given a complaint against the Lieutenant Colonel. “It was the Lieutenant Colonel who hit me with his elbow inside the courtroom. Outside the court, he not only abused me but also threatened me to leave the case. I am representing his wife. Other advocates also came there. His version is a lie,” he said.The FIR states that on verification of the circumstances, it was found that Bitta and his associates had beaten, abused, forcibly confined and threatened the complainant.Despite repeated attempts, Western Command Headquarters did not respond to requests for comment.
