Fifteen Indian nationals were killed on Saturday after a tourist speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc Island. Vietnamese authorities said the speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists, along with four crew members, when it overturned about 400 metres from shore while returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port.Twenty-one people were rescued in an operation hampered by rough seas and strong winds, while all 15 bodies were later recovered. An investigation has been ordered into the cause of the accident.Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam said officials in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City remained available for any assistance. The embassy said 10 of the deceased hailed from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala. It said officials were working closely with Vietnamese authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident.Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident. In a post on X, he said he was “extremely saddened” by the tragedy and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. He added that the Indian Embassy and Consulate in Vietnam were extending all possible assistance and remained in close contact with the Vietnamese authorities.Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged the Ministry of External Affairs to work closely with the Vietnamese authorities to ensure that every possible effort was made in the ongoing rescue operations and that all necessary assistance was extended to the affected families.
