The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in India will transition completely from paper-based testing to computer-based testing from September this year.IDP Education, a global study-abroad consultancy and co-owner of IELTS, announced the move on Thursday, saying the transition aims to provide test takers with greater flexibility, faster results and a more convenient testing experience, while continuing to deliver the globally trusted IELTS assessment. As part of the transition, IELTS on paper will remain available in India until August-end. Candidates who prefer the paper-based format can register for the final three IELTS on paper test dates scheduled for July 25, August 6 and August 22.IELTS on computer offers test takers the same trusted format, question pattern, level of difficulty and scoring criteria as IELTS on paper, while providing a more flexible testing experience. The transition is expected to benefit candidates through faster results, greater availability of test dates and computer-enabled features such as an on-screen timer, easy navigation across questions and a digital interface designed to support their test journey. From September onwards, candidates in India will be able to choose from two computer-based IELTS options. In the first option, candidates will complete the listening, reading and writing sections on a computer, while the speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner. The format offers features such as typing responses directly on screen, easy editing during the writing section and clear audio through headphones during the listening section.Candidates who prefer to write on paper will be able to take the listening and reading sections on a computer while completing the writing section on paper. The speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner.
