A day after tension at a gurdwara in Birewala Jattan village over alleged sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, the police have registered a case against unidentified persons.Objectionable words were reportedly found written on a page of the holy scripture and an attempt had allegedly been made to erase them using correction fluid. The incident triggered outrage among the Sikh community.Balbir Singh, SHO of the Jaurkian police station, told The Tribune on Thursday, “This is an old issue and was already under the notice of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which has been conducting a probe. The SGPC team came yesterday as well. Since the incident is old and occurred before the enactment of the new sacrilege law, the case has been registered under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the complaint of a Nihang, Boota Singh.” He said a new gurdwara management committee had been formed and the situation was peaceful.Ricky Singh, sarpanch of Birewala Jattan, said, “The incident is old, but the granthi who joined the gurdwara about two months ago came to know about the act on Tuesday. He informed some Nihangs in the village, who gathered at the gurdwara on Wednesday, which escalated the tension. It has been decided to form a new five-member gurdwara management committee within a week and the issue has now been resolved. Meanwhile, the SGPC is continuing its probe and recorded the statement of a former granthi yesterday.”
