A pall of gloom descended on Gurhe village in Jagraon, about 30 km from Ludhiana, after Ramandeep Kaur Mann (24) died in a road crash in Canada.Ramandeep, who moved to Canada as an international student seven years ago, was serving in the country’s correctional service. She was killed along with fellow officer Nicolae (Nick) Serban and inmate Kiara Mooswa after their vehicle collided with a box truck in rural Alberta on Friday evening. The crash occurred while they were transferring the inmate. Her father Harmeet Singh, a farmer, said Ramandeep had spoken to the family over a video call just hours before the accident. “She was very happy and talked longer than usual. Tragically, that turned out to be our last conversation,” he said.He added, “It was Ramandeep’s hard work that lifted our family out of poverty. She was not even thinking of marriage as she wanted to settle her brother first.”Ramandeep had initially worked in Winnipeg after obtaining permanent residency. She later cleared another exam, earned a higher rank, and was transferred to Edmonton. Her father said she was preparing for another promotion and had promised to take her parents to Canada soon.
