Under fire since the constitution of the Punjab BJP’s new executive body, state chief Kewal Singh Dhillon on Jattvibeday sent out a conciliatory message to aggrieved leaders and said he will personally engage with each one of them.In an interview with The Tribune a day after BJP national president Nitin Nabin nudged him and Punjab BJP organising secretary Manthri Srinivasulu to course correct, Dhillon said the party would take everyone along in the state.“In the BJP, we say sangathan hi shakti hai (organisation is strength). There is some anxiety among a section of leaders. I will talk to each one of them,” Dhillon said.Downplaying dissent within the ranks over selections for the state executive body, Dhillon said the BJP was expanding in Punjab and everyone would have a role to play in the near future.“Earlier, the BJP used to contest only 23 seats out of 117. Now, we are gearing up for all 117 seats in Punjab. Naturally, every leader will have a role to play and perform in the new and expanded BJP. We are yet to constitute Punjab BJP cells and morchas. We will adjust everyone,” Dhillon said. He added that yesterday’s meeting was dedicated to ways of strengthening the BJP in Punjab and making it battle-ready for the 2027 Assembly poll.“We will take veterans and young leaders, established and new leaders, together. We will open discussions with everyone to lay out the best way forward for the BJP to win the 2027 poll. The party is getting a good response and must capitalise on that,” the BJP state chief said.Dissent has been brewing in the BJP state unit over the recent appointments and then sudden removal of six district chiefs, alleged lack of regional balance in the state executive and promotion of obscure leaders with little contribution to the party.Sources said there was particular resentment over three of the five general secretaries of the Punjab BJP being from in and around Ludhiana.“A fair regional representation is lacking. Nearly 19 out of 49 major state-level positions have gone to leaders from just two districts — eight to Ludhiana and 11 to SAS Nagar. This over-representation of two urban hubs can potentially marginalise cadres across the remaining 21 rural and semi-urban districts. Even Doaba and Majha leaders have not been given adequate representation,” said BJP sources.One source said the elevation of municipal councillor Anuj Khosla as Punjab Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president had also caused consternation, including in the camp of former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.Further, sources said seven of 12 Punjab BJP general secretaries were outsiders, who later joined the party.Dhillon, who is himself originally from the Congress, said, “How can a leader who has joined the BJP be an outsider?”He said BJP chief Nabin yesterday also took stock of the ongoing Kalash Yatra, wherein sacred soil from Guru Ravidas’ birthplace in Varanasi is being carried to mark his 650th birth anniversary.“The yatra had entered Punjab on August 1, and we will take it to every home from village to village,” Dhillon said, while commenting on the BJP’s Scheduled Caste outreach in the state.The Punjab BJP has also planned to mark the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign and “Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas” on August 14.Anti-drug yatraAsked if Nabin discussed plans for the anti-drug yatra, which the Punjab BJP is planning, Dhillon said ‘yes’. The yatra is planned for September with Home Minister Amit Shah likely to either inaugurate it or address the gathering during its conclusion.
