The Indian economy has fallen from fourth place in the world to sixth place with USD 3.92 trillion, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed Parliament on Tuesday.According to Chaudhary, who cited the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) April 2026 World Economic Outlook, India’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was USD 3.92 trillion in 2025–2026, making it the sixth-largest economy in the world. In a written response to the Rajya Sabha, Chaudhary stated that nominal GDP calculated at current US dollar exchange rates is the basis for the IMF rating. He emphasised that a variety of factors such as changes in the size and growth of other major economies, changes in exchange rates and prices, changes in national accounts, and economic growth, can alter the relative ranking of economies.India’s economy surpassed that of the United Kingdom in September 2022 by nominal GDP to rank fifth in the world. According to the government’s year-end economic review, which was published on December 30, 2025, India’s GDP has overtaken that of Japan, making it the fourth-largest economy in the world with a GDP of about USD 4.18 trillion.India is now ranked sixth for 2025–2026 as the IMF’s April 2026 predictions put Japan and the UK ahead of India.Manufacturing, agriculture, infrastructure, and micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) are the primary domains of focus for the government’s comprehensive plan to boost India’s growth potential.Chaudhary highlighted that Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) programs, easing Quality Control Orders, increasing agricultural production, and infrastructure expansion are some of the measures. The government is also working to increase the efficiency of logistics while promoting innovation, digitalization, and research through PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy. Moreover, investment is supported by public capital expenditures, a liberalized foreign direct investment environment, and changes to direct taxation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
