Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Friday asked the state government to remove provisions objectionable to the Panth from the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act-2026 within the next 15 days. He said if it was not done, then the Sikh institutions would not accept the law and the Akal Takht would take action. The Jatheder conveyed this to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who had been summoned by the Akal Takht to give a clarification over the amendments to the Act.The Jathedar warned that ignoring the demand of the Panthic institutions would compel him to convene the meeting of five Sikh high priests to take action. He proposed to provide the government with a panel of Sikh legal experts and judges with whom discussions should be held to build a consensus on the law.The Bill was passed on April 13 and Governor Gulab Chand Kataria gave the assent on April 20.On May 3, Gargaj had summoned Sandhwan for ignoring the appeal of the Panthic bodies to send the draft law to the SGPC for consultation before passing it in the Assembly.Sandhwan said he would place suggestions of the Sikh clergy to the government. He said advertisements inviting suggestions from the public, Sangat and all stakeholders prior to the amendments were published in newspapers. He said he bowed his head at the Akal Takht, established by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, which was the highest institution of Sikhism. As per the directions of the Jathedar, Sandhwan visited Gurdwara Sri Ramsar Sahib, where SGPC officials briefed him about the functioning of the publication department and also demonstrated how records related to Guru Granth Sahib were maintained.Jathedar Gargaj said the Akal Takht did not have any objection to provisions of strict punishment to those guilty of sacrilege. He said the provisions inserted into the law placing Guru Granth Sahib, the internal administrative system of Sikhs, the SGPC, Sangat, granthis, gurdwara committees and other sewadars within a legal framework in the manner of the accused amounted to direct interference in Sikh affairs. He said the Khalsa Panth could never tolerate it.He felt that these provisions could cause fear among ordinary Sikhs, which could distance them from Guru Granth Sahib, terming it a very serious conspiratorial development. The Jathedar termed the provision of making public the information regarding the possession of sacred Birs of Guru Granth Sahib impractical. He said it could be misused by anti-Sikh forces and mischievous elements.
