Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla amid the ongoing stalemate between the government and the Opposition over a debate on the police crackdown on protesting students and alleged theft of Ram Temple donations.According to sources, Shah spent around an hour in Birla’s office.The Opposition has been stalling the Lok Sabha proceedings while seeking a response from Shah on the use of force by the police on students during their march to Parliament on July 20.It has been demanding Shah’s presence in Lok Sabha over the issue. The Home Minister has not attended either of the Houses ever since the monsoon session began on July 20.Earlier in the day, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rose to Shah’s defence and declared that the Opposition could not dictate the Union Minister’s schedule.Rijiju’s remarks came after the Lower House met after an initial adjournment and the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill was passed without any discussion. “Home Minister Shah comes to Parliament every day and stays till late night,” he declared, urging the protesting Opposition MPs to stop their “drama” of disrupting the House.”Amit Shah is a man whose name sends shivers down the spines of extremists and terrorists,” Rijiju stated amid the thumping of desks by members of the Treasury benches.”The day discussion begins here (in the Lok Sabha), and when Amit Shah responds, you (the Opposition) won’t be able to hear,” Rijiju further said, pointing to the protesting Opposition members.Rijiju said that the Opposition could not dictate the Home Minister’s schedule in Parliament, saying that ministers sit in both Houses as per their duty and roster.”Amit Shah sadan mein aao!” has been the constant chant of the Opposition for the past week, which has stalled proceedings of both the Houses, especially that of the Lok Sabha.Shah — on his part — comes to the Parliament complex every day and sits in his office, meeting ministry officials. On August 6, he had met several delegations of Christian leaders, including the one led by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, as part of the government’s outreach on the FCRA (Amendment) Bill which is expected to be discussed in Lok Sabha on August 12.He, however, has not gone to either of the Houses ever since the monsoon session began on July 20, a day which coincided with the Cockroach Janta Party-led march to Parliament and the subsequent police crackdown on students agitating against the NEET paper leak. The Opposition has been seeking his presence inside the House over the matter.Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met Shah in his Parliament House office.
