PM’s deaf ears

MORE than one million people have now signed the petition demanding the remorseless killers of PC Andrew Harper stay locked up.

The still new Prime Minister says he is “increasingly confident” he can find a fix to stop them being freed under Labour’s catastrophic early release scheme.

That isn’t good enough.

For as long as thugs Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers have hope of getting out, PC Harper’s family will still suffer.

This has become a huge first test of Burnham’s leadership and he is fluffing it.

So far, he has presided over a shambles that has sown anguish and confusion.

There are only a few short weeks for the PM and his officials to get their act together and free up jail places before the mass release of hardened criminals.

Prison experts are already warning of a wave of rape and murder to come.

If Burnham continues to get this wrong, he will pay a heavy political price.

Bungle? You bet

DOES anyone in Labour understand the real reasons behind the decline of our High Streets?

Andy Burnham went on a tour of the country this week promising to listen to voters’ concerns.

Bizarrely, he then decided betting shops were the root of all evil and has set about cutting the already dwindling number of them.

Even in his own constituency there is widespread bafflement at his attack on bookies and the bizarre comparison with vape shops.

As one punter in Ashton in Makerfield said of the Government yesterday: “They don’t know what they are doing. No one forces anyone to have a bet.”

Burnham claims to be a champion of sport and the working classes.

But if he is capable of misjudging the mood in his own back yard, what chance have the rest of us got?

Zero sense

THE Green lobby has been out in force claiming the heatwave-fuelled wildfires in Stourbridge and the East Sussex train derailment prove we must spend £400billion on Net Zero.

Few argue with the need for Britain to adapt to changes in the climate.

But it’s insane to chuck so much taxpayers’ cash at renewable schemes that don’t work.

Solar panels often don’t operate in extreme heat and wind farms don’t work when it doesn’t blow. Electricity from both cannot be stored.

Until these systems become more reliable, we will need the oil and gas currently sitting untouched under the North Sea.

That’s not climate change denial. It’s basic common sense.
