Is he sure he wants to spend taxpayer money defending his position in such a legal battle?
Not only would it be morally wrong, but it would also be politically stupid for Burnham to effectively line up on the side of two cop-killers.
There is already legislation in Andrew’s name — Harper’s Law — which recognises assaulting an emergency services worker is an aggravating factor.
Extending this principle to the manslaughter of a cop — and excluding anybody guilty of this heinous crime from the early release scheme — is one way out of this mess.
Burnham knows MPs of all parties would back emergency legislation to keep Bowers and Cole locked up.
The public mood on this is clear.
Just do the right thing, PM.
