ANDY and Jamie Murray are launching a YouTube channel – called The Set – in their first venture together since they both retired from tennis.

JattvibeSport sat down with Britain’s most successful sporting brothers to discuss their new online platform, life in retirement and why tennis TV pundits are too vanilla.

The first episode drops on Friday and they will teach celebrity and YouTuber KSI how to hit balls.

Why are you becoming content creators on YouTube?

Andy Murray: I spoke about it a couple of years ago, about the possibility of doing something, and then nothing really ever came of it.

Jamie and I went on the Fore Bros golf channel with Ian Poulter and then I did something with ex-cricketer Kevin Pietersen.

We felt there wasn’t really any great tennis content around. With YouTube we can be completely flexible in terms of when we film stuff.

I’ve done so many interviews over the years as a tennis player – so many of them felt similar. It just wasn’t always that interesting. Hopefully with stuff like this, it’s something that’s a bit more fun, more entertaining.

Jamie Muray: We’ve played tennis our whole lives but we haven’t done loads of stuff outside of the court. And it’s not like we’re doing a podcast.

Andy Murray: KSI is on the first episode. Crazy amounts of energy that guy. I’m not sure the Wimbledon members knew exactly what to make of that. He had all the Wimbledon gear on. He could actually play a little bit as well.

Given you have six kids between you – four for Andy, two for Jamie – how do you avoid becoming embarrassing dads online?

Jamie Murray: I hadn’t thought about that. But it’s something to consider!

Jamie, you retired from tennis in April. How are things since then?

Jamie Murray: I haven’t missed playing at all. If there’s a tournament for me to miss being a part of, it’d be Wimbledon.

But I’m looking forward to my role at Wimbledon with the BBC. Still being a part of the event without the stress of playing. The fun part is the playing.

Do you enjoy your lives now? Taking your kids to sports class and school?

Andy Murray: I haven’t missed playing at all. Last year I did something in Wimbledon Village, on the Saturday before Wimbledon started. I drove past Wimbledon and bumped into one of the players.

It was like, Oh, it’d be nice to be playing. But apart from that, I haven’t had any days where I’ve missed hitting a ball. Or being on tour or at tournaments. I didn’t experience that when I was coaching either.

When I coached Novak Djokovic last year, I didn’t miss the playing side. I thought at some stage it’d probably come – but it hasn’t yet.

Do you both train? You haven’t let yourselves go in retirement.

Jamie Murray: I still train. I went to the gym this morning. I still need to be active.

Andy Murray: It goes up and down for me. I’ve gone through periods where I’ve trained a lot. I hurt my back a few months ago, so I didn’t train much for the next six to seven weeks.

And that’s the great thing about being retired. If something hurts, you don’t need to go to the gym or push your body. When you’re playing, there’s still the pressure to go out and compete.

Whereas now I still enjoy training. I like going to the gym. If my knee or back hurts, I just don’t need to do it.

Andy, you will be coaching Jack Draper at Wimbledon. But how come you haven’t gone into TV commentary like Jamie?

Andy Murray: I did it once and didn’t massively enjoy doing it. My opinion on tennis coverage, I mean it’s changing a little bit now, but I don’t find it that entertaining. I don’t find it that insightful.

There’s never much debate really, which is what I enjoy in other sports. In football, I enjoy listening to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, discussing, arguing, debating over different points of view. In tennis, I very rarely see that. Everyone just agrees with each other.

Jamie Murray: It’s vanilla.

Andy Muray: I don’t enjoy watching it that much. I don’t think people are always completely honest with their points of view and perspectives.

They’ve got other roles within the sport. Do you actually think that? Or is it because you’re protecting another role?

With something like YouTube, you can do whatever you want. Say what you like and give your honest opinion on stuff. I like that.

The first episode of The Set YouTube channel – Can We Turn KSI into a Pro Tennis Player? – will air on YouTube on Friday from 5pm. Visit youtube.com/@murraystheset
