Frustrated by the growing number of potholes on city roads and the lack of timely action by the Municipal Corporation, a 75-year-old retired bank employee has taken it upon himself to repair damaged stretches, earning admiration from residents and highlighting the shortcomings of the civic administration.Harminder Singh, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and a former employee of Punjab and Sind Bank, recently came into the spotlight after a video showing him filling potholes near the Municipal Corporation’s Zone D office went viral on social media. The video was uploaded by city resident Arvind Sharma, who was moved by the senior citizen’s dedication towards public welfare.Despite his age, Singh can be seen carrying construction material and filling potholes on his own. What makes his effort even more remarkable is that he lives alone and spends much of his day helping people and undertaking small public service activities.Speaking to The Tribune, Singh said he started repairing potholes because he was concerned about the inconvenience and danger they pose to commuters, especially senior citizens riding two-wheelers.”Large potholes cause sudden jerks and can easily lead to accidents. Elderly persons are the worst affected. I felt that instead of waiting for someone else to act, I should do whatever I can,” he said.Singh revealed that for the last 15 days, he has been filling potholes in Model Town, Pakhowal Road, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and nearby localities. He often requests residents and shopkeepers to provide broken interlocking tiles, construction debris and other suitable waste material that can be used to temporarily fill road craters.”I ask people to help with old interlocking tiles and road material. Whatever I get, I use it to level the potholes so that vehicles can pass safely,” he said. For Singh, the work is not a burden but a source of satisfaction. “I feel relaxed and happy after doing this. If my efforts can save even one person from getting injured, it is worth it,” he added.Residents who have witnessed his work praised his commitment and said his actions send a strong message to authorities responsible for maintaining city roads. Many said it was inspiring to see a 75-year-old man doing a job that should ideally be carried out by civic agencies.Undeterred by his age, Singh remains committed to his mission. “I will continue doing this till my last breath,” he said with determination. His selfless efforts have not only made roads safer for commuters but have also become an example of how one citizen’s initiative can inspire an entire community.
