The Bathinda police have arrested a man for allegedly raping his 12-year-old step granddaughter over the past two years.The incident came to light when the victim’s health deteriorated and she complained to her mother. The family admitted her to a hospital on April 26 and a case was registered on Saturday.The victim’s mother, a daily wage worker, said, “My mother has remarried and her husband had been raping my daughter for about the past two years. He used to give her sedative capsules to commit the crime. I came to know about it a week ago. I took her to the hospital and later lodged a statement with the police as well. Since I am an illiterate, a police man at the Vardhman police post altered my statement and did not act on it. Now, I have heard that a case has been registered.”Meanwhile, some social workers sought action against the cops as well.Inspector Harjot Singh, SHO, Canal Colony police station, said, “We received information about the rape of a minor girl from the local civil hospital on Saturday and acting on the statement of the victim and her mother, a case was registered under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. The accused has been arrested today and further investigation is under way.”
