A day after Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO inspected the newly constructed Kotbhara-Ramgarh Bhundar road here and rejected allegations of poor-quality work, some PWD officials and police personnel on Monday visited the village and agreed to have the road reconstructed if deficiencies were found during the inspection. The decision came amid a controversy over the quality of the road and allegations of police harassment involving the family that had recorded and circulated a video showing the road surface being damaged with bare hands. Two DSPs, HS Sra and Gurpreet Singh, along with PWD (B&R) officials, visited the residence of Gurbinder Singh, former sarpanch of Ramgarh Bhundar village.“The officials also assured that the complaint filed by PWD officials against me, alleging damage to public property, would be disposed of. The police also returned the mobile phones and CCTV camera DVR taken from my residence on Jattvibeday,” said Gurbinder, while talking to The Tribune.Activist Lakha Sidhana read out the assurances given to the family in writing by the officials in the presence of the public. The minister had on Jattvibeday maintained that the road had been constructed according to prescribed standards. He had said that a sample of the road had been collected by the Quality Control Centre, Patiala, for testing and assured that action would be taken against the contractor if any deficiency was detected. The minister had also challenged senior SAD leader and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and her brother, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, to visit the spot after the two raised the issue through social media posts. He had described the allegations and the viral video showing the road being broken by hand as misleading and accused the Opposition of trying to mislead the public.Residents of Ramgarh Bhundar, however, maintained that the minister had not visited the actual spot where they wanted to show him the condition of the road. The controversy intensified after another video surfaced, purportedly showing police personnel twisting the arms of two youths and attempting to take away a mobile phone. Kotfatta SHO Sub-Inspector Harbans Singh had said the police team visited the house following a complaint from a PWD executive engineer and alleged that the occupants had misbehaved with the police personnel.Ravneet Bittu visits villageSenior BJP leader and former Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu also visited Ramgarh Bhundar village, met the residents and condemned the entire episode. By the time Bittu reached the village, the matter had already been resolved following the assurances given by the authorities.
