A Bhopal court on Tuesday summoned the police diary related to the case of Twisha Sharma, the Noida woman who was allegedly harassed for dowry and died last week, following a petition by her family seeking a second autopsy.More than a week after former model and MBA graduate Twisha Sharma was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal, her family on Monday moved a local court seeking a second postmortem, alleging serious lapses in the investigation and claiming crucial evidence was not presented during the first autopsy at AIIMS-Bhopal.Twisha was allegedly found hanging at her husband Samarth Singh’s residence in the Katara Hills area on May 12, five months after marrying him following their meeting through a dating app.Her family has refused to perform the last rites and her mortal remains continue to remain at AIIMS-Bhopal as they press for a fresh postmortem at AIIMS-Delhi and a CBI probe.“We have moved an application for a second postmortem of Twisha before the concerned magistrate in Bhopal,” the family’s lawyer Anurag Shrivastava said. The fresh demand came after questions emerged over the handling of material evidence, i.e. the belt, during the first postmortem examination. As per the postmortem report, the investigating officer did not produce the nylon belt allegedly used for hanging before the doctors conducting the autopsy. Thus, the medical team could not scientifically compare the alleged hanging instrument with the ligature marks found on Twisha’s neck. The omission has now become a major point of contention in the case, especially after the family alleged that Twisha’s neck had two parallel ligature marks. The alleged belt, recovered from the crime scene, could have played a key role in determining whether the marks were consistent with hanging and whether the material was capable of causing those injuries. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Misrod ACP Rajnish Kashyap, acknowledged that the belt had been seized from the scene but was not submitted during the postmortem examination. The police said the lapse was being examined and the material had been handed over to the forensic team and deposited at AIIMS-Bhopal.Twisha’s family has alleged that the omission weakened a critical piece of evidence and raised concerns over the fairness of the investigation, particularly because the accused family has a legal background. The family has also questioned why the police were “not informed immediately” despite a police chowki being located close to the residence.Addressing a press conference on Monday, Twisha’s brother Major Harshit Sharma alleged that the first call to the police was made by the victim’s family and not by the accused side. “They claimed that they were in a hurry trying to save her. However, the video that has resurfaced clearly shows Giribala Singh moving around very calmly, walking up and down the stairs as if she had all the time in the world,” he alleged.Major Sharma further questioned why police action was delayed despite the proximity of the police outpost. He also alleged that it took his family more than three days to get an FIR registered.“Our FIR was finally lodged on May 15 at 2:30 in the morning. Even before that, their anticipatory bail application had already been filed. It all appears to be a well-orchestrated effort from their side,” he alleged. He also questioned why greater attention was not being paid to the whereabouts of Samarth Singh, who has been described as absconding in the police records. The developments came hours after Giribala Singh publicly rejected allegations of dowry harassment and murder, claiming Twisha had been emotionally disturbed after learning she was pregnant and had insisted on aborting the child.Earlier today, speaking to the media, Giribala Singh alleged that the ‘turning point’ in the marriage came after Twisha learnt she had conceived on April 17. “The moment the conception message came on the 17th, her attitude changed. She said she did not want the child,” Giribala alleged.“When I asked her why she did not want the child, she said, ‘It feels like the child is killing me from inside. I do not want it.’”She further claimed that Twisha later underwent medical termination of pregnancy and became emotionally unstable afterwards.Rejecting allegations of dowry harassment, Giribala Singh said, “Why would we demand a dowry of two lakh rupees when we ourselves gave them seven-and-a-half-lakh rupees? It simply makes no sense.”The police have registered a case under Sections 80(2) and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to dowry death and cruelty by husband or relatives. As the SIT continues its probe, the battle over Twisha Sharma’s death has now shifted beyond allegations of suicide and harassment to questions over missing evidence, delayed police action and whether the investigation itself was compromised in its earliest stages.
