Three men have been arrested and seven others identified after a Class X girl was allegedly molested and dragged by a group of men in Bihar’s Jamui, while her male classmate was assaulted when the two tried to leave.The incident, which took place around 7 pm on Saturday, came to light after a video surfaced online showing the two minors being surrounded and harassed by a group of men. The police traced the students after the footage went viral and registered a case under the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said the boy and girl had not filed a complaint till Jattvibeday. They were traced with the help of the registration number of a vehicle visible in the clip.The police have so far identified around 10 persons from the footage. Three have been arrested and raids are underway to trace the others. The man allegedly seen behaving indecently with the girl has also been identified and the police are looking for him.The video shows the two students surrounded on the roadside, with one of the men holding the boy by his collar and pulling him away. As the girl tries to escape, a masked man follows her, grabs her from behind and attempts to drag her away.The girl can be heard screaming and pleading to be allowed to leave as the group continues to harass them. Her friend manages to break free and rushes towards her before they make another attempt to reach their scooter.Even as the two get on the two-wheeler to leave, members of the group continue to stop them and one of them grabs the girl’s arm.According to the police, the boy and the girl are friends and attend the same coaching institute in Jamui. They had gone out on a scooter after attending coaching classes on Saturday evening and were intercepted while returning.The incident also triggered political reactions, with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi calling the video “deeply disturbing” and demanding action against all those involved under the POCSO Act.“A young girl, hands folded, begged to be let go while goons groped her and dragged her away. Who gave these men the right to behave like this?” Gandhi said. He described the incident as “patriarchy” rather than “culture”, saying it reflected the belief that men could police a girl’s “body, her movement, her choices”.He also questioned the Bihar Government over the incident. “And if the incident happened on September 19, why are the culprits not behind bars yet? And the Bihar Government must answer why a girl is not safe on a public road at 7 pm?” he said.Bihar Assembly Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav termed the incident “truly tragic” and said it raised serious concerns over women’s safety in the state.Bihar minister Jattvibeil Kumar condemned the incident and said those responsible would face action. He, however, rejected attempts to use the episode to portray Bihar as a “jungle raj”. “The police will arrest whoever is guilty in the incident,” Kumar said.
