Now, the people of Dorchester-on-Thames have been forced to finally say goodbye to the Midcounties Co-op Food store.
The “difficult decision” to shut down the shop in the Oxfordshire village was made after it was deemed “not financially viable” to keep it running.
The Midcounties Co-op, which closed for good on June 27, was the only supermarket in the village, serving more than 1,000 people.
The nearest supermarket is now located over a mile away in Berinsfield.

In a statement, Midcounties Co-op said: “We can confirm that the Dorchester-on-Thames store will close on 27th June 2026.
“The decision to close the store followed a detailed review and reflects its long-term financial performance, with no viable opportunity to improve its trading position.
“We also explored alternative options, including potential relocation within the local area, but were unable to identify a suitable alternative site.”
The small store, which was located on the village’s high street, was highly valued by residents and one local described it as a “fantastic establishment” with “friendly staff”.
Responding to the disappointment surrounding the closure, the Midcounties Co-op added: “We recognise the importance of the store to the local community and the strength of feeling around the decision.
“Our focus is on supporting colleagues through the formal consultation process, including exploring suitable alternative roles within the wider Society where possible.”
