India on Tuesday said remarks by a senior Canadian police official on the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case were consistent with the recent US federal indictment that attributed the assassination to members of the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime syndicate, while at the same time asserted that any extradition request from Washington would be dealt under established legal and judicial processes.Responding to questions at the weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi had taken note of comments made by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Deputy Commissioner Lisa Moreland following last week’s coordinated crackdown on transnational organised crime networks.”We have noted the remarks made by the RCMP Deputy Commissioner. These remarks are consistent with the recently unsealed US indictment which attributes responsibility to the members of the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime group,” Jaiswal said.India’s reaction came days after the US Department of Justice, in a federal indictment unsealed under “Operation Hard Ball”, alleged for the first time that jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his Canada-based associate Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar had ordered the June 2023 assassination of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.Following the indictments, Moreland had said the organised crime investigation had found no evidence linking the Indian government to Nijjar’s killing, adding that responsibility in the case had been attributed to members of the Bishnoi gang.Jaiswal reiterated that India remained committed to working with international partners against organised crime and terrorism.”We have seen the announcements made by the US Department of Justice regarding the indictments and enforcement action against transnational organised criminal networks operating across several countries,” he said.”India has consistently maintained that transnational organised crime, terrorism, narco-trafficking, human trafficking, illegal firearms trafficking and related criminal networks pose a serious threat to our societies,” the spokesperson added.Jaiswal further said India and the United States shared “strong and growing cooperation” in combating terrorism and transnational organised crime and that law enforcement agencies of the two countries had worked closely together over the years.”Our agencies have worked closely together over the years, and this cooperation continues to deepen,” he said.Asked whether the United States had approached India seeking the extradition of any of the accused named in the indictment, including Bishnoi, Jaiswal did not comment on the specifics.”As in any extradition case, it is something that will be dealt with as per the established legal obligations and judicial processes that are applicable in this particular case,” he said.US officials had earlier confirmed that Washington intended to seek the extradition of Bishnoi and other accused named in the indictment, although no formal request has been publicly announced. The US indictment, while alleging that Bishnoi and Brar ordered Nijjar’s assassination, does not accuse the Indian government of any role in the killing. The clarification by Canadian investigators is also being viewed as significant, coming nearly three years after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a “potential link” between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s assassination, triggering an unprecedented diplomatic crisis between New Delhi and Ottawa.
