Chandigarh Police have cracked an inter-state motorcycle theft racket with the arrest of a fifth gang member, taking the total recovery in the case to 26 stolen two-wheelers, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, Jashandeep Singh alias Jashanpreet alias Jashan (18), a resident of Mahlewala village in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, was arrested on August 5 on the disclosure of four accomplices held earlier. Nine more vehicles — five Splendor motorcycles, a Bullet, two R15s and a KTM — were recovered from his possession. The gang had first come under the police scanner on March 26, when a police team apprehended four men — Ajay Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh, Rashpal Singh and Gurjeet Singh, all residents of Ferozepur and Moga districts — near Dronacharya Stadium in Dadumajra. The four were caught with two Activa scooters fitted with fake number plates, which on verification turned out to be stolen. A case was registered at Police Station Maloya, and 17 vehicles were recovered from the quartet at the time. The operation was carried out under the directions of SSP Kanwardeep Kaur. The police said the racket appeared to target two-wheelers across the Tricity and adjoining Punjab districts before fitting them with fake plates for resale. Further investigation is underway to trace the network’s other links and buyers.
