Three ways Arsenal baffled Chelsea with ‘Mr Freeze’ Havertz dismantling old side
But this may have never happened had they pursued a deal for a player up the road.
According to BBC Sport, Chelsea showed interest in signing Berge as their Fernandez replacement.
Norway international Berge was among the options explored by Blues transfer chiefs during the final days of the window.
However, they never submitted a formal bid for the 28-year-old.

The Craven Cottage outfit are also said to have considered the Norway international to be not for sale.
Berge has made 78 appearances for the Cottagers since his arrival in West London from Sheffield United in 2023.
Chelsea were also eyeing moves for Roma‘s Manu Kone and allegedly Everton’s James Garner, though manager David Moyes denied that suggestion.
It means the club will likely make a move to land a new midfielder in the January transfer window.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, also a target for Manchester United, is among the priority targets.
Chelsea lost their first game under Alonso last weekend away at Arsenal, having taken an early lead through Morgan Rogers before goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard propelled the Gunners to victory.
Berge was one of Fulham’s key stars last season
