The High-Powered Inquiry Committee headed by Justice R Subhash Reddy, constituted to examine allegations of police violence during the NEET protests, has been asked to take up on priority the complaints of sexual assault faced by women protesters, the Supreme Court said on Monday.The clarification came from a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant after senior counsel Shobha Gupta requested it to take suo motu cognisance of the allegations of sexual assault and molestation of women during the July 20 CJP protest at Jantar Mantar here.Gupta urged the top court to establish a mechanism through which alleged victims directly submit their complaints for examination.The CJI, however, said the High-Powered Inquiry Committee would take up on priority basis complaints of sexual assault faced by protesters.In its order, the top court had asked the committee to address certain issues on a priority basis, foremost amongst which were alleged incidents of targeted violence, harassment and molestation of female protesters.”…the committee has been requested to examine it on a priority basis, and immediately submit an interim report,” the CJI said.Justice Bagchi pointed out that an independent writ petition was filed on the same cause, and the HPEC has been asked to examine the issue.The Supreme Court has set up a five-member High-Powered Inquiry Committee headed by former top court judge Justice R Subhash Reddy to look into alleged police excesses against student protesters and violence against police personnel during the CJP protests here last month.The other members of the panel are former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court Judge Shalinder Kaur, former CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla and ex-Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi.
