The 81-year-old comic received an email from the venue last week telling him that his show was cancelled due to their values not aligning with each other.

The comic’s Facebook page revealed the news of the cancellation in a lengthy post shared this week.

The post read: “SADLY ANOTHER VENUE BITES THE DUST.

“Unfortunately the Exmouth Pavilions new management informed us late Friday night by email that they would be cancelling Roy’s planned performance Friday 21st August 2026.”

They then revealed the email the venue sent simply said: “This show no longer aligns with the organisations long- term strategic direction.”

“Make of that what you will,” Roy’s page added, “I think you can guess what my opinion is but let’s not go over old ground again !!!!”

The page went on: “Cancelling a show 3 and a half months before the actual date, when as I said fans / customers have bought tickets and probably made travel plans etc, I’m sorry doesn’t in anyway and again in my opinion, totally the wrong decision.

“I have since talked to one of the theatre management to try and make sense of the situation and although (obviously to say we see it totally different would be an understatement) , sadly the decision will not be reversed.”

The page added how Roy is still due to perform at the Babbacombe theatre Thursday 20th August 2026 which is the closest gig Roy does to Exmouth or failing that is performing at the Playhouse Weston super mare Saturday 22nd August 2026.

Concluding their post, Roy’s page said: “Please note, never say never but at Roy’s time of life these will POSSIBLY be Roy’s last 2 shows in Babbacombe and Weston super mare , again not retiring , just slowing down a little with the travelling so don’t miss out.”

Fans of the comic were quick to flock to the comments section to react to the news.

One person penned: “Here’s a sensible idea, let people go and see an act if they want to, don’t tell me what to like or dislike and if you don’t like the act…. DON’T GO TO IT.”

“Comedy should never be cancelled, it is an art. Comedy has the right to offend, that’s what makes it funny,” said a second.

“Personally, he’s not my cup of tea but plenty of others find him funny so, whilst I wouldn’t buy a ticket, I wouldn’t object to anyone else buying one,” added a third.

While a fourth said: “Too many snowflakes in the world, one of the best comedians I’ve ever seen, can’t wait to see you again…long live freedom of speech and Chubby.”

Roy, whose real name is Royston Vasey, was born in Yorkshire and shot to fame as a comedian in the 1970s.

His personal image is characterised by a clown-like stage costume comprising of a leather flying helmet and goggles, as well as a multi-coloured patchwork suit.
