Kapil Sharma’s big screen release Daadi Ki Shaadi has sunk without a trace. The collection on the opening day was approximately Rs 1 crore, and it only got worse over the weekend. The failure is not only a big blow to stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma’s movie plans, but also a huge thumbs-down to Neetu Kapoor’s plans of returning to acting. Last but not the least, the failure puts paid to Neetu Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor’s daughter Riddhima’s acting ambitions.A close family friend of the Kapoors reveals, “Riddhima’s brother Ranbir Kapoor was totally against her doing the film. It was Kapil who persuaded Riddhima’s mom and Riddhima. The end result is for all to see. The Kapoors deserve a lot better than this patchy outdated unfunny comedy.”Kapil, in the meanwhile, has decided to stay away from the big screen projects. He feels he is better off on the home medium.Analysing the film’s sobering failure, trade expert Taran Adarsh says, “Daadi Ki Shaadi hasn’t worked at the box office the way it ideally should have. The film had several factors working in its favour, yet the numbers don’t quite reflect the appreciation it has received from audiences. A section of the industry tends to hold the lead actor solely responsible whenever a film underperforms – a trend that has existed for decades. Personally, I don’t subscribe to that viewpoint.”Taran defends Kapil as a big screen actor. “There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with Kapil Sharma as a performer. Audiences have embraced him for years on television and he has successfully carved a niche for himself with light-hearted comic entertainers that largely mirror his natural persona. However, somewhere down the line, his acceptability as a conventional big-screen hero or leading man may not be as strong. But the dynamics of television and digital platforms are very different from theatrical cinema. Having said that, ‘Daadi Ki Shaadi’ has certainly found appreciation among a section of the audience. One only hopes the film manages to hold steady at the box office in the coming days.”
