DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN’S goal-den run came to a frustrating end as Leeds were held by struggling Crystal Palace.

The in-form striker was chasing a sixth successive goal at Elland Road to match a record that had stood for 94 years.

But Calvert-Lewin was kept out by a brilliant Walter Benitez save as the Eagles kept a much-needed first clean sheet in the league since April to take them a point clear of the bottom three in 15th spot.

It could have been three for Pierre Sage’s men had Tyrick Mitchell’s 53rd-minute effort not been ruled out for a tight offside call in the build-up.

But in a sluggish start by the hosts, Calvert-Lewin barely got a sniff against a side that had been desperate in defence this term.

Palace had conceded two or more goals in each of their last 10 Prem matches – second only to Fulham’s run of 13 in 2019.

But they showed some grit in Yorkshire as Daniel Farke’s men were held to a goalless draw for the first time since March.

Argentine keeper Benitez, again deputising for the injured Dean Henderson, was punished for taking too long with his goal-kick and fortunate Tarik Muharemovic steered his header wide from the resulting corner awarded to Leeds.

But Palace calmed down and took control with a couple of counter-attacks at the other end that almost paid off.

Quinten Timber sent a wild finish over after the first in the sixth minute, before the Dutchman slipped through a pass for Jurgen Strand Larsen in the box, but Muharemovic made a timely sliding challenge to deny him a clear sight of goal.

Nico Elvedi did the same as Leeds diced with danger at the back and keeper James Trafford was eventually forced into a low save to stop a low Daichi Kamada strike.

A series of crucial blocks again thwarted Palace before Noah Okafor finally provided an attacking outlet for the hosts when he raced down the left but his low fizzing cross was cut out.

Having fired an earlier effort wide, Ao Tanaka slashed another opportunity off target after Benitez had punched a clearance into his path and left his goal gaping.

Palace, though, punctured the mood of the home crowd with a storming start to the second half where they created three chances to open the scoring.

Yeremy Pino powered in a free-kick from the edge of the box that was pushed away superbly to his right by Trafford, while Jefferson Lerma hooked the resulting corner over from close range.

Kamada lashed a low drive wide before Palace did put the ball in the net when Mitchell arrived late to crash home after Anan Khalaili’s cross had dropped to him.

But on his top-flight debut, referee Adam Herczeg ruled out the strike after Khalaili was adjudged to be offside by VAR when running on to a Pino through-ball.

Relieved, Leeds responded with a first big chance of their own in the 56th minute when James Justin’s right-wing cross was met by the lurking Calvert-Lewin, but his finish was brilliantly blocked by Benitez.

A tense finale followed and Ethan Ampadu had to make an inch-perfect tackle to stop Kamada in the box.

The Japan midfielder then headed agonisingly wide before Muharemovic made a decisive last-ditch challenge to nick the ball away from Ismaila Sarr as he was about to shoot after being teed up by fellow sub Eddie Nketiah.
