The India-Africa Forum Summit, scheduled to be hosted by New Delhi from May 28 to 31, has been postponed in view of the evolving health situation in parts of Africa.Parts of the continent have reported an outbreak of a new, more severe strain of the Ebola virus.There has been an outbreak of the disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo and it has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organisation.Over 136 people have reportedly been killed due to the outbreak of the disease in the African nation so far.The Ministry of External Affairs said the two sides held consultations and it was agreed that “it will be advisable to convene the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit at a later date”.The new dates for the summit and its associated meetings will be finalised through mutual consultations and communicated in due course, the MEA said in a statement.Recognising the importance of ensuring full participation and engagement of African leaders and stakeholders while being mindful of the emerging public health situation in the continent, consultations were held between the Government of India, the chairperson of the African Union and the African Union Commission regarding the holding of the summit and associated activities.The two sides exchanged views and reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation in strengthening public health preparedness and response capacities across the continent, including through support to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa-CDC) and relevant national institutions.⁠India reaffirmed its solidarity with the people and governments of Africa, and expressed its readiness to contribute to the Africa CDC-led efforts aimed at addressing the evolving health situation, in line with the shared commitment to an Africa-led response.The MEA said India and Africa reaffirmed their longstanding partnership founded on solidarity, mutual respect, South-South cooperation and a shared commitment to peace, development, prosperity and the well-being of their peoples.Meanwhile, the Delhi airport has issued a health advisory for passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected countries, asking those with symptoms of the disease to immediately report to airport health authorities before immigration clearance.Sharing the information, the airport listed Congo, Uganda and South Sudan as “high-risk” countries, asking sick passengers coming from and transiting through these to take immediate action. The airport listed fever, weakness or fatigue, headache, muscle pain, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding and sore throat as symptoms to watch for.This comes a day after the Union Health Secretary held a high-level review meeting with the states on Wednesday to assess preparedness and response measures regarding the Ebola Virus Disease.
