Six-year old Aysha is set to become the only pupil at a new school opening in Ginostra on the Italian island of Stromboli, the Daily Mail reports.

This is a small village of around 40 residents on the island famous for its perpetually active volcano.

Residents in the tiny village once had its own school, but it closed due to the dwindling number of residents.

Local authorities agreed to reopen it after Aysha’s parents, Monica Abbate and Raffa Bazine, warned they would have to relocate in order to educate their daughter.

They also insist that she is happy as a sole pupil.

“We love this little paradise, the nature, the sea, even the volcano that looms over our homes. We don’t want to have to leave,’ Mr Bazine said.

“She hangs out with peers who stay here for months at a time, and she’s learned a few words of German from the neighbours’ children who go on vacation in Ginostra. She’s a happy child.”

The school will be located in a building owned by the local parish of the Catholic Church.

Ginostra is one of three villages on the island alongside San Bartolo and San Vincenzo.

It is so isolated that residents have dubbed it “the island within an island”.

The island and its active volcano have become iconic in popular culture, with J.R.R Tolkien claiming he based the fictional volcano, Mount Doom of Mordor on Stromboli.

Earlier this month, Britan’s smallest school in Wales closed its doors after its two remaining pupils headed off to secondary school.

Ysgol Y Garreg school, located in Penrhyndeudraeth, North Wales, shut at the end of August after 100 years.
