FOR many, tucking into a Snickers or Twix bar is a favourite treat – but as we all know, there is a lot less to them now than there used to be.

While sweets still come in a familiar wrapper, the products inside these days are a very different size to the ones we grew up eating.

Shoppers have watched their favourite chocolate bars decrease in size while prices stay the same – or even rise – a process referred to as “shrinkflation”.

Manufacturers cite rising production costs and the soaring price of cocoa as the key factors behind the shrinkage.

Marketing expert Professor Ratula Chakrubarty, from the University of East Anglia, said: “Brands have been using shrinkflation for a while.

“Consumers are unable to notice a five to ten per cent difference in weight.”

Here, Luke Chafer takes a look at how today’s chocolate bars measure up – or rather, how they don’t.
