Protesting farmers in Faridkot have deferred their proposed rail roko agitation following a meeting with Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and senior district administration officials, though farm leaders made clear that their ongoing sit-in outside the Speaker’s residence will continue until all their demands are fully addressed.The meeting, held at Kotkapura, saw farmer leaders presenting their grievances in detail before Speaker Sandhwan and top officials in what both sides described as a positive and constructive atmosphere. Speaker Sandhwan told the gathering that the issues were being considered at the government level. He said matters falling within his own jurisdiction would be acted upon directly, while issues requiring the state government’s intervention would be personally taken up by him, and that continuous dialogue would be maintained to resolve the farmers’ legitimate demands.Referring to the case of the two farmer brothers from Hari Nau village who died by suicide amid debt distress, Speaker Sandhwan said he had been personally assisting the family and would continue to do so, standing by the commitment he had earlier made to them. He disclosed that an assistance amount of Rs 2 lakh, payable by the government in the case, had already been transferred to the family’s account. Further support would be extended in line with government policy and rules as it became available, he said, adding that if any policy amendment was required to ensure eligible families received due relief, the matter would be taken up with the government.Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba, who was present at the meeting, said the district administration was taking the farmers’ issues seriously and would bring them to the notice of the concerned departments for appropriate action as per rules. He said the administration remained in constant contact with all sections of society and gave priority to resolving issues through dialogue and due process, and appealed to farmer leaders to stay in touch with the administration and continue expressing their views peacefully.Following the talks, farm leaders said the decision to defer the rail roko was intended to spare commuters inconvenience and to give the administration time to act on its assurances, but stressed that the morcha at the Speaker’s residence would remain active. They warned that if concrete action was not visible within the agreed timeframe, they would be forced to resume their plan to block railway tracks across the region, and said the agitating farmers would remain stationed at the protest site until formal orders on their demands were issued.SSP Moga Sartaj Singh Chahal, Additional Deputy Commissioner Keshav Goyal, SP Yogeshwar Singh Goraya, SDM Kotkapura Rajinder Singh, Tehsildar Parminder Singh, DSP Sanjeev Kumar and other officers were also present at the meeting, along with farmer leaders.
