Here’s how you can help your four-legged family member beat the heat on a budget . . .
BOTTLE IT: Grab a couple of plastic bottles, fill them with water and freeze them overnight.
Wrap each one in a thin tea towel and tuck them under your pet’s bedding, rotating them as they thaw.
The gentle chill will last for hours, giving your dog or cat a cool spot to curl up on.
Or wet a lightweight blanket or a large towel, wring it out thoroughly, then stick it in a plastic bag and freeze for an hour.
Lay the frozen towel under your pet’s bedding and it will gently cool their sleeping area.
Check the temperature regularly and pop it back in the freezer when needed.
ICE TIME: An easy way to keep your pooch feeling their best in the heat is to add a few ice cubes to their water bowl.
You could also throw their favourite toys in the freezer for a bit, before letting them play with them as an extra way to cool off.
PET POPSICLES: Whip up a batch of healthy ice lollies with this easy recipe from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
Chop one apple, removing the core and seeds.
Then grate one carrot and blend it with 300ml water until smooth.
Pour into small paper cups and freeze for one to two hours until partially set.
Then, push a meaty, stick-shaped treat into each one to act as the handle, then freeze completely.
Peel off the cup then feed the popsicle to your dog to help them stay cool.
CARDBOARD COOLER: Find a large cardboard box, lay it on its side and line it with a blanket.
Drape a damp, cool cloth over the top to create a shaded den so your furry friend can sleep away from the sun’s glare.
WALK SMART: Avoid walking your dog between 11am and 3pm when the pavement will be scorching hot.
A simple test is to place the back of your hand on the ground for five seconds.
If it’s too hot for you, it’ll be too hot for little paws!
