Also commonly referred to as people carriers, MPVs can have from five to nine seats, making them ideal for accommodating big families or groups.
Although they come in a range of sizes, their distinguishing feature is a cabin designed to provide maximum interior space, often with folding seats to increase luggage space.
With a design that prioritises space and comfort, it’s not surprising that MPVs are a popular choice as family cars.
However, with the rising popularity of SUVs and 7 seaters capable of catering to family needs, the demand for and range of MPV cars for sale diminished.
But experts at Autocar have hailed the return of one of these vehicles – the Ford S-Max, an off shoot of the immensely popular Galaxy MPV.
In a review, they said the versatility of the Ford S-Max was its strong point.
They wrote: “This was a car that could swallow six by four-foot slices of mdf and allow you to shut the tailgate on your load.
“It could heft sizeable items of furniture and a mighty heap of smaller things besides.
“And because each of the two rear rows of seats folded individually, you could carry plenty of stuff and more than two people.
“Even with seven aboard the S-Max had a pretty decent boot.”
