The government on Wednesday appointed former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Vempati will hold the post for a tenure of three years from the date he assumes charge.The appointment follows the resignation of Prasoon Joshi, who stepped down as the CBFC Chairperson after being elevated as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati.Vempati, a seasoned professional in media, broadcasting and public communication, is expected to bring his extensive experience to the role. His appointment is seen as a move to further strengthen the functioning and regulatory framework of the CBFC, the statutory body responsible for certifying films for public exhibition in India.An IIT-Bombay alumnus, Vempati is also the co-founder of AI4India, an organisation dedicated to democratising access to artificial intelligence in India. He also serves as a board member of BharatGen, which aims to create India’s first sovereign, multi-modal generative AI ecosystem.
