Nearly two months after a woman died by suicide over years of alleged gang rape at a village in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, her sister was forced to take the same extreme step this Friday.Her family members alleged they had lost another daughter due to police inaction. They alleged that the police apathy, despite several complaints, had emboldened the accused so much that they had ultimately started sexually assaulting the younger sister too, who was trying to seek justice for her sister.In a police complaint filed on April 11, the woman had alleged that her elder sister was wronged by a service centre operator named Mahipal, who had secretly made “obscene” videos of her. In the complaint, a total of eight accused were named who had allegedly gang-raped the elder sister for years by issuing threats, as per a report by NDTV.They had not just assaulted her sexually, they also extorted money from her, the second sister had stated in the complaint.Distressed, she died by suicide on March 20. Though an FIR was registered based on the complaint, no concrete action was taken. The accused then started targeted the younger sister.Failing to get protection or action from police, the younger sister climbed atop a tank and consumed poison on Friday.After the incident, the Jodhpur police said that Mahipal and another accused had been detained.
