In a shocking move on Saturday, the governing body of Dyal Singh Colleges-New Delhi approved a controversial agenda to rename Dyal Singh Evening College in the capital and cleared two renaming options–Banda Singh Bahadur College or Majithia College. The second option–Majithia College–has been incorporated as a reaction to protests by Dyal Singh Evening College staffers, who have been resisting the renaming and demanding that the glorious legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, the great philanthropist, be preserved and honoured. The governing body, under chairman DS Chauhan, however, today confirmed the agenda (including the college renaming) that had previously been debated at a meeting held on December 5, 2025.Sources said the dissent note which teacher representatives of the college wanted to submit (they were demanding status quo) was not taken on record despite repeated requests for two hours during the meeting. The ball is now in the court of Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, who can approve either of the two new names or maintain status quo and let the college continue by its current name.Dyal Singh Evening College Staff Council president Mithilesh Singh told The Tribune that they would await minutes of today’s meeting and consider moving court as the last option should the DU stamp the renaming proposal.“Renaming is illegal. Under the agreement signed between Dyal Singh College Trust and DU regarding the land for the institution, the name of the college is protected and any alteration of the name is illegal. A name change would not just undermine Dyal Singh ji’s legacy, but also entail abdication of college land. So we can go to court against the move,” Singh said. He flagged another alleged illegality–the renaming resolution was passed by the governing body without prior consultation approval of the staff council, the main consultative body. The council had in January resolved to oppose the renaming move. When contacted, governing body chairman DS Chauhan said, “What has to happen will happen; what does not have to happen will not happen. I cannot comment publicly on a governing body agenda. In any case, my tenure is ending on June 30.”
