India on Monday changed Citizenship Rules to introduce stringent disclosure norms for applicants in possession of passports issued by the governments of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.The Centre today notified amended Citizenship Rules making changes in the 2009 landscape and mandating passport disclosures for applicants from the above three nations.The amendment was notified tonight through the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Extraordinary Gazette of India.Under this amendment, a new provision has been inserted in Schedule IC of the Citizenship Rules, 2009.The rule says that applicants seeking Indian citizenship will now have to declare whether they possess any valid or expired passport issued by the Governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh.If an applicant possesses such a passport, complete details, including passport number, date of issue, place of issue and date of expiry, will have to be furnished in the citizenship application.The notification further states that applicants will also have to undertake to surrender their valid and/or expired Pakistani, Afghanistan or Bangladeshi passports to the Senior Superintendent of Post or Superintendent of Post concerned within 15 days of the approval of their citizenship application.The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the amendment had been carried out under the powers conferred by Section 18 of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The new rules came into effect immediately.
