“Better than one in two, so as a striker at international level, that’s pretty impressive and something to be proud of.

“Obviously we had a nice celebration the other day [after beating Mexico].

“But I know how much of a fan you are, of the boys and England in general, so this is for you, mate.”

The presentation was met with a huge round of applause from England’s players and staff as a stunned Crouch accepted the honour.

An emotional Crouch admitted he had not seen the tribute coming.

He said: “Thank you very much, lads. I wasn’t expecting this at all.

“I just want to put it back on you boys.

“I was in Mexico the other night and I thought it was, easily – even playing the game and being a fan myself – one of the best performances I’ve seen and one of the best nights I’ve had in my life.

“What you boys are doing is absolutely incredible and what you’ve done is made the whole country start believing in the team.

“You’re not just inspiring kids to play football and be the next Harry Kane, you’re making the whole country proud and believing in what you’re doing.

“Congratulations. Thomas, you’ve done an incredible job as well, and I’m very proud as an Englishman to see you boys doing what you’re doing. So keep it up!”

England face Norway next in Miami with a place in the World Cup semi-finals up for grabs.
